Here are some tips on learning how to stop being shy:
- Smile. When you are with anyone else try to smile and look at the person who is speaking to you. This makes you look open and friendly, and people will be more likely to talk to you or engage you in conversation.
- Plan, Plan and Plan: if it is an important event like an interview or a party, plan ahead. Plan what you will wear and is it clean and ready? Have a few questions you could ask the people you are with. If you start questions with words like “what”, “where” and “how” (called open questions), then people cannot just answer with a simple “yes” or “no”, so they have to go into more detail creating a more interesting conversation.
- Listen. How many times have you been in a conversation and when the other person is speaking you have been thinking in your head about what you want to say next? So you have not really heard a word the other person has said. If you listen, and I mean really listen, to what they are saying you are able to pick up points of what they have said and ask them more, making the conversation longer and you much more interesting.
So, if I want to learn how to stop being shy, you need to learn how to control your nervousness and anxiety when in the company of other people. You will need to research methods and strategies for coping with your own anxiety and nervousness, which can take time and practice.
